The Parrot received all the fine details pertaining to Uncle Bharrat’s annual brunch for the media held at State House last Sunday. Well, it has to be described as lunch since the heavy rains at the scheduled time, 11:30 hrs, caused some to be late. For some who were absent, the rain wasn’t the excuse. Some boys seh that it was the ban on the Gordon boy that cause Dennis De-menis to lead a boycott. It seems that the Guyana De-Press ASSociation has retained old habits despite it being a new year. Old people seh, “once a menis, always a menis”.
Plenty people did show up despite the rains. Those who came from Berbice couldn’t stop talking how easy it is to cross now. In some parts of the room it wasn’t just an exchange of pleasantries customary for a new year; it was bridge exchanges as well. The ease at which those from the east crossed was evident in the attire of the females; gown-like dresses; the Little Rock lady sparkled like a Pearl. This type of dressing for such an occasion could have only been possible in the past if the invitees had travelled the day before and overnighted in GT. Dem days gone like “Fineman”. People can leave 11 o’clock for a 12 o’clock function. Praises for Uncle Bharrat.
Uncle Glenn and Uncle Adam were noticeably absent. Dem boys seh that in Uncle Glenn’s case, it was unavoidable. For Uncle Adam it was a different story; he polished his new car the day before to help him make an impression so that he could look good when he would have turned up. The rain spoiled he plans; he didn’t want to drive the car and spoil the polish; so he stayed home watching the rain. Uncle Enrico was absent too; so were his and Julia’s teams and the comrades at the Big Market paper. Dem same boys seh that they all followed Dennis. The same set o’ boys seh that Dennis and the others were ashamed to attend and eat up and engage in hand shaking having “bad-mouthed” Uncle Bharrat and his Ministers all year round.
Uncle Bharrat wasn’t even bothered by their absence. According to some, they weren’t missed. The confirmed Commissioner didn’t miss it; neither did Uncle CN. The way he was dressed, he obviously missed the date or had just woken up after attending the Old Year’s Nite party. The man turned up with the same party hat he wore on December 31-08/January 01-09! He was the only man with a hat on. One man seh that Uncle CN thought that brunch was a fancy word for an after Old Year’s Nite party. Another man seh that Uncle CN wore the hat so that it could mitigate his vertically challenged dilemma. The same man added that Uncle CN wore the hat so that he could have stood out from the crowd.
This apparently he did when he was seen to be engaged in serious discussions with Uncle Bharrat in a corner away from everybody. Uncle CN even brought a gift for Uncle Bharrat! Dem boys were baffled, not only at him attending, but to know what was in the bag. According to them, it is the tape that Uncle CN played over and over; the same tape that got he into trouble. Apparently he doesn’t trust his operators (yeh right, blame them) who might want to play the tape again, so he gave it to Uncle Bharrat to prevent a recurrence. Smart eh? And dem same boys does seh that the man…Anyway, as the theatre saying goes, Uncle CN “upstaged” Dennis and his gang; he did not support the boycott. Party on CN. Uncle Freddie is still seeking a Freudian explanation for his absence. Squawk! Squawk!
