Jackson John Abel Marare, 18, of Warrie Village, Central Lethem, is currently training to become a teacher. Yesterday, he appeared before the acting Chief Magistrate, Melissa Robertson, to answer to a charge of having carnal knowledge of a woman without her consent.
The defendant was not required to plead.
It is alleged that, on December 27 last, the accused raped a 25-year-old woman after meeting her at a birthday party.
When asked by Magistrate Robertson what he had to say about the alleged rape of the virtual complainant, the accused said that, on the day in question, he was at home in his hammock when his friends came over and invited him to a birthday party.
He said that he later went to the party, where he met the young woman, with whom he began dancing.
‘I was drunk and we were dancing and back-balling. I was drinking Paiwari’ he told the court.
Magistrate Robertson remanded the defendant to prison, and ordered that he re-appears in court on March 3, 2009.
