2008 was a highly successful year for the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) according to Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in his end of year report to the media.
Foster said the club overcame many challenges including the high cost of sport gear and transportation for its various sectors, while being able to excel at cricket. The club also organised other sports during the year, table tennis, basketball, cycling, volleyball, circle tennis, chess, domino and athletics.
Three club cricketers, Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon and Esuan Crandon represented Guyana at the senior level while Delbert Hicks was on the senior standby list for the four day tournament. Esuan Crandon also successfully captained Berbice to the Inter County 20/20 title. Dominic Rickey played for the national team at the under-15 level while a total of 12 club members represented Berbice at all levels during the year.
The Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar Team won the Busta Champions of Champions tournament, Gafoor’s Berbice 20/20 Cup and reached the semi-finals of the national 20/20 tournament.
Earlier in the year the team placed third in the National Pepsi/Carib 20/20 Cup after defeating Leguan in the third team playoffs at Albion. They were also the runner-up in the Berbice Sprite 20/20 and Ansa Mc al 10/10 tournaments.
The RHT Farfan and Mendes under-15, Pepsi under-19 and the Bakewell Second Division teams also did well winning a total of 8 tournaments which included the RHT / Williamsburg Friendship Trophy, George Trim Memorial, JC Chandisingh Memorial and the Eric Lewis Memorial Cup.
The club created history when it established the first female cricket team.
This team which is sponsored by Metro Office and Computer Supplies played in all male under-15 tournaments and won all their matches.
Nine team members represented Berbice at the under-19 level, while six played for the Berbice senior team. Shermaine Campbell, Tremayne Smartt and Erva Giddings played for Guyana at the senior level while Nikita Toney was a standby player.
Erva Giddings was then selected on the West Indies Female Cricket team – the only Guyanese on the squad that toured Sri Lanka.
Other events held during the year: 17th annual awards ceremony where 35 cricketers were honoured; 11th annual Cricket Academy sponsored by Sprite where a total of 120 young cricketers attended; hosted former West Indies cricket Captain Deryck Murray and during his 3-day visit the club successfully hosted the Murray/Basil Butcher tribute cricket match which saw Berbice taking on Demerara at Canje; launched the Basil Butcher Trust Fund and first ever Evening with the Stars programme.
Four major cricket tournaments were organised in an effort to promote the game in Berbice, three at the first division level with the other for Secondary Schools.
The club in 2008 assisted 30 fellow cricket clubs in the Ancient County with cricket gear and other equipment as well as educational and hygiene kits. Schools, the Berbice and Demerara Umpire Associations, Berbice Cricket Board and retired test umpire Compton Vyphuis also got assistance.
The Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation and the Guyana Chess Federation also cashed in.
With 2009 expected to be a challenging year due to the worldwide financial crisis, Foster said the club would have to cut back on some of its usual activities especially assistance to other clubs. Administrative and operational costs are areas of concern to management he noted.
The club membership was praised for their commitment and hard work which contributed to a successful year. Sponsors and the media also came in for praise form Foster.
