Prison officials are probing an incident at the Camp Street penitentiary in which Death Row inmate Noel Thomas was stabbed with an improvised ice pick.
Reports state that Thomas was stabbed in the chest during an altercation with another Death Row inmate, identified as Safraz Rahim, during an altercation at around 09:00 hrs yesterday.
He was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation but was not admitted. Thomas’s alleged assailant has reportedly been placed in solitary confinement.
Director of Prisons Dale Erskine confirmed that the incident occurred, but said the matter is still under investigation.
Thomas and Abdool Yasseen were sentenced to death for the 1986 murder of Yasseen’s younger brother, Abdool Saleem Yasseen. The elder Yasseen has since died in prison.
Yasseen had paid Thomas a sum of money to kill Yasseen’s younger brother, who had been bequeathed with a property.
The sordid plot reportedly came to light when Yasseen refused to give Thomas the full sum they had agreed for the act.
