– participation at inaugural Caribbean Games in balance
“2008 can be described as a frustrating year for the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) since we are still to resolve our position for the 2009 Caribbean Games,” President Lenox Shuffler said via e-mail.
Shuffler was reflecting on the year’s performance where he also cited the cancellation of the Inter-Guianas Games, which was scheduled to be staged in French Guiana, as a great setback which must have affected the motivation of the young players who had prepared extensively for the tour.
He added that while volleyball is being played at a recreational level in many parts of Guyana, he must admit that there was limited activity from the GVF and Demerara Association and this has to be a very disappointing feature that has to be corrected this year.
According to the GVF Head, several competitions were played in Berbice where the sport seems to be regaining some sort of vibrancy, but proper media coverage is needed to help popularize it and at the same time hasten its development.
On the plus side, a document for the introduction of volleyball in schools was completed by Nicholas Fraser, Yutende Grant and other relevant stakeholders which later received the endorsement of the GVF.
Shuffler explained that from their (GVF) standpoint it is hoped that the document will be implemented in 2009 following approval from the Ministry of Education since this could provide the necessary injection that the sport needs and also work as a feed to stimulate interest in students thus offering a larger pool of players to choose from for the Inter-Guianas.
He also promised that a working committee will be set up to streamline the activities of the GVF in 2009 and to prepare the way for election of new office bearers since the current executive term in office expires in December.
The President, who is enjoying his second stint at the helm of the Federation, said he will not be seeking re-election, but is willing to act in an advisory role to ensure that the game benefit from the right propulsion that would see more persons being involved at a participatory level.
Guyana because of its affiliation to the South American Bloc and the stringent policy being implemented by the Caribbean Games Organisers pertaining to countries eligibility for participation at the upcoming event, is still awaiting word from them.
