–Ravens poised to top Division I
By Edison Jefford
Heavy rainfall and a hydro–meteorological forecast that predicted a further 16 days of inundation yesterday threatened to stall both outdoor Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Leagues.
The GABA Division I and III Leagues, which started last October, were to continue early this month at the outdoor Burnham Basketball Court. However, inclement weather has raised recommencement doubts.
GABA General Secretary, Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that a GABA meeting is scheduled for tomorrow where the issue of the commencement of the Leagues will be adequately addressed.
“We were scheduled for a January start with no formal date set and that was because we knew it would have been the rainy season. But we will be meeting on Monday with the view of finding the way forward,” he said.
According to the GABA Secretary, the likely alternative is to take the Leagues indoor but that would not prove economical because of the stage of the competitions and the high cost for rental of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Division I League is in its fifth round out of seven, while the Division III League is in its penultimate round out of six rounds. Eight and seven teams are currently vying for top honours in the first and third division Leagues respectively.
Dyna’s Ravens are the only unbeaten team in the first division competition with Courts Pacesetters unbeaten in the third division; with just a minimum of two rounds remaining, both teams are poised to win respective titles.
“The possible alternative is to go indoors but the price for the Sports Hall is not a cheap one,” Cadogan said, adding that the League is even more important because it marks the new Executive’s first project.
New GABA President, Trevor Rose had indicated that the association will be embarking on projects aimed at taking the sport back outdoors. Apart for the Leagues, the GABA had held a retreat on the Burnham Court.
The Burnham Court like the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) court in Linden is completely exposed to weather. However, the Burnham Court floods more easily owing to the lower altitude of Georgetown as opposed to Linden.
