The Kashif and Shanghi football extravaganza has already concluded but the excitement witnessed at almost every match remains indelible on the minds of football buffs. Obviously, footfall enthusiasts are yearning for more.
Well, there is more and football fans are assured of lots of action when the Mayor’s Cup championships get underway at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground. Under the auspices of the Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green, the first match in the knockout tournament commences on Friday January 23 and the organizer, former national footballer and coach, Lennox Arthur has promised much excitement. In a recent interview with this newspaper, Arthur intimated that he had already completed a lot of work in his bid to provide top class entertainment for the patrons. He said that he has received affirmation from all of the sub associations plus the blessings of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
Arthur also said that he has spoken with several members of the business community on the issue of sponsorship and the response has been heartening. However, there is still a lot of work to be done in this department and as such, he is appealing for added corporate support.
The organizer further assured that everything have been done to give the tournament an exciting flavour. The action starts at the very beginning of the tournament with an exciting double header. This Georgetown/Linden affair will witness Top XX from the mining town opposing the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) while city team, Conquerors will play another Linden team, Milerock. Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
The rest of fixtures read: Sunday January 25 Camptown vs Golden Grove and Pele vs Victoria Kings in an East Coast/Georgetown affair. Friday January 30- Pouderoyen take on Uprising and Western Tigers oppose Uitvlugt. Sunday February 1- Buxton All Stars opposes GFC and Alpha United will come up against B V Triumph.
Friday February 8 (Quarter Finals) Winner of match #3 tackles winner of match #5 while winner of match #2 will play the winner of match #6.
Sunday February 8 (Quarter Finals) Winner of match #4 plays winner of match #7 and winner of match #8 opposes winner of match #1.
Sunday February 15 (semi-finals)- Winner of match #11 versus winner of match #9 and winner of match #12 opposes winner of match #10.
Sunday February 22 (Final) and Third place playoff -Winner of match #13 versus winner of match #14
The Mayor’s Cup was inaugurated in 1985 with then Prime Minister, Hamilton Greene as the patron. As such, it was first known as the Prime Minister Cup. Subsequently, after Greene became Mayor, the name of the tournament has been changed accordingly.
The winning team will pocket $500,000 and the Keith Niles trophy while the runner-up receives $200,000 and a trophy.
The 3rd place finisher receives $100,000 and a trophy while the team finishing fourth receives $50,000 and trophy. There will also be prizes for the Most Valuable Player, best goalie and the player that nets the most goals.
