A man who managed to escape from the police on New Year’s Day, despite being shot in his right hand, was taken into custody yesterday. He had been made to seek treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
Joseph Wessel, 43, of Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo, was arrested at Parika at about 06:30 hours yesterday, after police received information that he was hiding out there.
According to the police, at about 18:30 hours on New Year’s Day, ranks responded to a report of wounding, which stemmed from a domestic argument at Greenwich Park between Indra Sancharan, 37, and her reputed husband Joseph Wessel.
The police said that Wessel had inflicted stab wounds with a knife to the woman’s head, abdomen and right hand.
Upon arrival at the scene, Wessel reportedly attacked the ranks with the knife, despite calls for him to desist. The police then resorted to the use of force, and Wessel was shot to his right hand.
He, however, managed to escape, but was subsequently arrested the following day at Parika.
The injured man was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was medically treated and is currently in police custody.
According to the police, Wessel was recently released from prison, where he had served a sentence for wounding.
His reputed wife, Indra Sancharan, was also taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she is being medically treated.
