The recent spate of road deaths has led Commissioner of Police Henry Greene to remark that the problem mostly stems from ‘drivers speeding’ and others driving under the influence of alcohol.
He said that “it is not necessarily the lack of road lights that causes these accidents but those behind the wheel. We should speak out when we see these”.
Passengers too play a very important role in the efforts to help curb this problem, he added.
“They should make noise when they see drivers taking advantage of their privileges when driving. It is unfortunate that for last year and this year alone there have been almost 400 road deaths.
He pointed to the accident that occurred opposite the Celina’s Resort which claimed the life of UG student Kellon Griffith on Christmas Day, while his friend received injuries and was taken to the hospital.’ Greene noted.
“Drivers are going too fast, and passengers are afraid to speak out against such behaviour. Yesterday’s accident was only another of such misfortunes.”
Greene urged that citizens have the right to state their views when necessary if they should notice drivers breaking the law.
