Dear Editor,
There are lots of reasons why tourists continue to refuse to come to Guyana in numbers and one of them is the way some police officers treat citizens – with discourtesy and disregard for the basic tenets of humanity.
I was out at the New Court Yard, formerly Palm Court, on Friday night (December 26, 2008) at approximately 11:30pm when two policemen invaded the night spot and proceeded toward the DJ boot to shut down the music.
As a paying customer, I stood there appalled at the manner in which these officers in question barged through the private property. I was lost for words as patrons inside and outside stood dumbfounded as the episode played out.
The proprietor of the business entity then tried to get an explanation from the officers as to what was really happening but the two officers did not seem inclined to explain. Pleas fell on deaf ears.
They subsequently left and briefly returned with a larger contingent of police ranks, one of whom apparently stepped on the proprietor partner’s feet. The proprietor asked the officer to apologise and the officer laughed. Immediately, the proprietor asked the officer if he found what he had done to be funny and the officer continued to laugh. The gesture agitated the proprietor who merely raised his voice at the policeman.
After just raising his voice, the said officer told the proprietor that he was under arrest and proceeded to place the man’s hands behind his back in an aggressive manner and escorted him away, much to the displeasure of customers.
Even after the proprietor was taken away, customers refused to leave the night spot while police ranks continued to peruse the place with guns.
The police ought to have behaved in a more civilized manner.
