With the race for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) elections heating up, candidates vying for the GCB Presidency will be monitoring results from the County Boards elections to assess their possible support at the national level.
On Sunday last, 50-year-old Keith Foster defeated former President Malcolm Peters by a 20-18 margin in a ‘tight’ race for the Berbice Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) Presidency at the Board’s annual General Elections at the BCBC office in New Amsterdam.
Foster is the eldest son of Former Berbice, Guyana and West Indies Test batsman Basil Butcher and has been the President of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports club since its formation in 1990. He will have West Berbice’s David Black as his First Vice-President after Black defeated long serving BCBC executive and Guyana senior team Manager Carl Moore by the close margin of 20 votes to 18.
Mark Lyght beat Veemen Walters 22-16 for the position of Second Vice-President while Ricardo Bachan of Blairmont defeated Rohan Calendar of Port Mourant 22-16 for the Third Vice-President position. Thirteen clubs and three sub-Associations voted.
Angela Haniff was reinstated unopposed for a second term as Secretary, Carol Nurse was voted
unopposed as Assistant Secretary, former Berbice left-arm spinner Anil Beharry was returned unopposed as Treasurer after former Guyana youth off-spinner Orvin Mangru declined nomination. Rose Hall Canje’s off-spinner Romesh Munna was elected unopposed as Assistant Treasurer.
Foster has been the Acting BCBC President since October when Jafferally Asrafally resigned and was at the helm of the BCBC when it became the first cricket board in Guyana to publish a Magazine. Under Foster’s leadership, the BCBC launched its Hall of Fame, Berbice All-Time X1, Tribute to Cricket Workers programme and held its inaugural Berbice Cricket Awards ceremony.
The new executive of the BCBC will meet shortly to name its sub-committees and the composition of the selection and competitions committees is eagerly awaited by cricket fans.
The Essequibo Cricket Board’s elections are fixed for January 11 and Wakanaam’s Asif Ahmad is expected to challenge incumbent Alvin Johnson for the Presidency.
The Demerara Cricket Board is scheduled to contest their elections two days before the GCB holds their elections on January 26 and incumbent Bissoon Singh is expected to retain his position.
