Bartica speedboat operators lower prices

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, yesterday met with the executive of the Bartica-Parika Speedboat Owners’ Association and announced a decision taken to reduce the price from $2,000 to $1,900 per crossing between Parika and Bartica effective from January 1, 2009.

The Minister said that he had hoped that the price would have reverted to the old price of $1,800 but there will be ongoing discussions with the aim of making that a reality.

Minister Prashad noted that about two weeks ago the Parika/Supenaam Speedboat Owners’ Association decreased their fares from $1,200 to $1000 per crossing from Parika to Supenaam following a meeting with the Ministry.

According to him, he had hoped that the arrangement with this association would have been with immediate effect.

He added that he recognises that there is a little problem with the gas price in Bartica because the price did not come down from $1,040 per gallon to $550 per gallon. “The price per gallon of gas in Bartica has only dropped to $860 per gallon which I found very strange.”

Minister Prashad said that he has contacted the Managing Director of Guyoil to look into the situation.
