Kurt Persaud and Gerald Harry, who were involved in the deadly crash that left University of Guyana student Kellon Griffith dead last Friday morning, are still in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations.
According to police sources, the two young men are declining to say anything about the matter without their lawyers being present.
Kaieteur News understands that there were skid marks on the roadway, which could indicate that the driver of the vehicle was probably speeding. However, both Harry and Persaud have denied that they were drinking and speeding.
Kellon Griffith was killed when the vehicle in which he was travelling turned turtle on the Rupert Craig Highway in the vicinity of Celina’s Resort, on Boxing Day. At the time of the accident, Griffith was returning home to Atlanticville after a night out with friends. The crash occurred at around 04:00 hrs.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are sketchy. Police reports have indicated that motor vehicle PJJ 2916 was being driven at a fast rate by 20-year-old Kurt Persaud, of 119 John Street, Campbellville, with passengers Kellon Griffith and Gerald Harry, 20, of South Vryheid ’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.
Reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a metal rail and turned turtle. All three occupants received injuries and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Griffith was pronounced dead on arrival, while Persaud and Harry were admitted.
Persons in the vicinity of the accident said that they had heard a loud crash. They said they rushed to investigate, saw the mangled vehicle outside, and immediately rushed the occupants to the hospital. Kellon Griffith succumbed from massive head injures.
According to Griffith’s mother, Mary Griffith, her son left the family’s Atlanticville, East Coast Demerara home in a dark-coloured car at around 21:30 hrs on Christmas Day.
After the accident, friends of the deceased came to inform his relatives of the accident. These immediately rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, and upon arrival they were given the dreadful news about Griffith’s sudden demise.
The victim’s sister, Kellisa Griffith, told Kaieteur News that she had always urged her brother not to travel in the vehicle.
“But he would say that his friend can drive, and would end the conversation,” she lamented.
After losing their only son, both parents are urging drivers to be more careful on the roadways, especially during this rainy season.
Kellon Griffith leaves to mourn his father and mother and only sister, Kellisa. Investigations are continuing into the matter.
