A fire, believed to be electrical in origin, broke out at the Guyana National Shipping Corporation Limited (GNSC) offices at 5 – 9 Lombard Street yesterday, at approximately 09:00 hours.
According to a source within the Guyana Fire Service, the fire probably started due to an “information machine” which was left on overnight, or possibly over the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays. Compounding this, the fireman noted, was the fact that there was no surge protector connected to the machine.
A manager’s office was significantly damaged, with the fire being restricted to that area.
Reports from security personnel working in the area said that the Guyana Fire Service responded quickly, and brought the small fire under control. The early morning traffic into Georgetown had to be rerouted, as members of the police force cordoned off Lombard Street, so as to allow the fire service to operate without hindrance of passing traffic.
