Dear Editor,
We are facing some serious times as they relate to the current weather patterns and rising water levels in various parts of our country.
These types of situations are very crucial for our national development, and can hinder production, especially in the area of agriculture.
I wish to note that I write in the capacity of retailer of agricultural produce.
I have been keeping abreast with what is happening through the media, and can attest to the fact that the floods have indeed affected some areas, especially on the East Coast of Demerara. It is evident that damages were done in some areas, but we should all remember the old saying, “Man proposes but God disposes”.
I have read and heard many farmers saying that they are losing crops and livestock, and in some instances by the thousands. I want to inform the public, the Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant agencies that, during this time, farmers would have finished harvesting their crops for the festive season, or have already sold most of their livestock to the markets.
I sometimes wonder how persons can be so dishonest when these situations arise. Most of the farmers are complaining about the rains, but this is something that we can’t escape; instead, we should start preparing for the upcoming rains, because we know what it is going to be like, since everyday we have been hearing about climate change and its effects on Guyana.
I want to urge those who will be giving relief of any kind to do thorough investigation before distributing any assistance, since there are many out there who will be taking advantage of such assistance.
I wish to congratulate the relevant agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture, especially the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, for their efforts to help relieve the sufferings faced by residents under water by setting up drainage pumps and activating all the abandoned sluices. May God continue to bless this great land of ours. Season’s Greetings to all.
Amanda Joseph
