Dear Editor,
A letter written by a friend of a former Director of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus and published in your newspaper has been brought to our attention.
The writer accuses the university of unjustly dismissing Dr. P. S. Thakur, charging that that behaviour is typical of the continued interference of the Turkeyen Campus in the affairs of the Berbice Campus. It is necessary to correct these errors.
The former Director’s contract came to an end, and there was no renewal of it. There was no injustice; no violation of anyone’s rights or contractual obligations. Secondly, it is generally understood by now that there is one university with two campuses — one in Berbice and one at Turkeyen. Although there is, inevitably, some amount of decentralisation, both campuses report to one central administration, which has overall responsibility for their affairs.
It so happens that this central administration is located at Turkeyen, but the overall authority is exercised by that body, not by ‘the Turkeyen Campus’. The two should not be confused.
