A very Merry Christmas to all my readers!
Today all Guyanese are waking up to another Christmas. For those of us, the older generation, it is always a special privilege to enjoy another Christmas because as you get older you do not know whether you will live to see another.
Christmas is a great time in Guyana. I know of no country in the world where Christmas is enjoyed as much as in Guyana. And this is why those in the Diaspora who are disconnected from their own homeland, who experience the alienation known very well to immigrants, enjoy returning home for the holidays.
Christmas 2008 in Guyana will long be remembered. For it was during this holiday season that the century old mystery was finally solved. From time immemorial, there was speculation as to the identity of Santa Claus. Some even ventured to speculate that he may not have even been from the North Pole and this was just his temporary residence.
Then in the latter part of this year the suspicion began to grow that Santa Claus was really from Guyana. It all began quite inadvertently when an elf accused Santa Claus of outsourcing a factory to Guyana.
There was a great uproar in the North Pole and Santa himself had to summon the elf to ascertain how he came to the conclusion that a Santa franchise had been opened in Guyana. The elf confidently stated that he had passed over Guyana and had seen the company called Santa Textile Mills.
When the elf said this Santa Claus breathed a sigh of relief because he knew that this particular elf had an eyesight problem and what he saw was not the Santa Textiles Company but the Sanata Textiles Company.
Santa Claus gave the elf a verbal reprimand since he said that from the manner in which that company was disposed of, any mortal may have felt that the sale was like a Christmas present.
Anyway I will say no more because this is the season of goodwill and I have been on the case of many persons this past year. I wish to let all of them know that over the next few days, I shall be a good boy and not be critical of any of them.
In fact I wish them all a Merry Christmas. I shall begin with the President. I know you have come in this year for some scathing criticism from the Peeper, all of which of course was justified. But this is Christmas and the time to be good to my fellow man. I, therefore, wish the President and the government as well as the Opposition Leader and all the persons whom I have had reason to take issue with this year, a very Merry Christmas.
I promise to change…just for the next few days. Come New Year’s Day I will change back and start up again because there are some issues that need to be made public.
What is now public knowledge is the fact that Santa Claus has been unmasked. His identity has been revealed. He is from Guyana. In fact it is now known that he is from Kaieteur News.
Yes, the publisher of Kaieteur News, Mr. Glenn Lall is Santa Claus. The secret is now out.
I always suspected Glenn all along. But I should have known earlier especially since over the past few months he seems to have been growing a midsection.
Glenn Lall did something that has never been done before in this country. He answered the wishes of over 1500 children who wrote letters to Santa asking for presents for persons they knew. When Lall learnt that the letters were being kept at the post office, he sent for them and had his staff go through each one. He answered the wishes of over fifteen hundred children, something that has never before been done in this country and which could only have been done by Santa Claus.
Glenn Lall has made the greatest impact this Christmas. He is the real McCoy. He is the authentic Santa Claus.
Today, the Christmases of over fifteen hundred children have been made because of this singular gesture of kindness from a great Guyanese, one whose heart is too big for the 83,000 square miles that make up this country.
Glenn, you have done a wonderful thing. But I have come to expect that from you. You are one of the most generous persons in the world. Your heart is filled with goodness.
If only more Guyanese could emulate your example and give as freely as you give, this country would be a better place. Merry Christmas to you, Glenn Lall, and may you continue to make dreams come through in the New Year.
