The police have launched an investigation into an incident which occurred at about 23:30hours Tuesday at the Springlands Police Station, during which prisoner Tyrone Lucius was shot.
Reports are that the 22-year-old of Corriverton, Berbice, who is mentally unstable, was shot and injured after he had escaped from the lockups.
Tyrone Lucius was taken into police custody at about 13:30 hours on Monday after he was found on the premises of a residence at No. 75 Village, Corriverton, without any reasonable explanation.
A police release said that the ranks were subsequently informed by a relative of Corriverton that he was mentally unstable and efforts were being made to have him admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital at New Amsterdam.
According to the police report, about 23:30 hours, while in the lockups, Lucius began behaving disorderly and later requested a drink of water.
While one of the ranks on duty was giving him the water Lucius pushed open the lockups door, pushed away the rank and ran into the Enquiries Office where he damaged chairs and a window.
Lucius then ran into the compound where he damaged the stand-by generator at the station and attacked police ranks who were making efforts to subdue him.
These efforts failed during which Constable 18235 Sears was lashed with a piece of wood, Lance Corporal 18458 Fraser was struck to his face with a bottle, and Sergeant 10210 Cumberbatch was injured to his right leg.
Subsequently, the police resorted to using force and Lucius was shot and injured. He has been admitted a patient under guard at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
