Despite predictions of there being less travel to the region due to the global crisis currently being faced, thousands of overseas-based Guyanese and some visitors are coming to Guyana for the holiday season.
Minister of Tourism, Manniram Prashad, said that he is very pleased with the response of visitors.
According to him, there has not been a significant increase but he is pleased that despite the financial crisis there has been no shrinkage in arrivals. “I’m very pleased. The numbers are very encouraging.”
He added that all the flights are filled. “Delta has everyday flights while LIAT has sometimes two and three flights per day.”
Minister Prashad also said that from all indications this will be a very successful holiday season.
“Guyanese are returning like never before.”
The Guyana Tourism Authority said that from December 13 to December 20 more than 5,000 persons passed through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and of those 1076 were visitors.
Managing Director of Caribbean Airlines told this newspaper that in the last 10 days the airline brought in some of 4,900 persons.
He noted that there is an additional flight this year and they are on par with last year in terms of numbers.
Last week, Minister Prashad visited the airport to initiate the annual meet and greet which is a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, the Guyana Tourism Authority and the CJIA.
The meet and greet runs up to today. Incoming passengers are given black cake, rum punch and other goodies as they arrive at the airport.
The Minister said that feedback from passengers indicate that the passengers are very pleased with the special welcome and it makes them feel happy to be home.
Some of the passengers said that they took the decision to return to Guyana given the inclement weather in the US.
