Six years and counting
By Franklin Wilson
Former footballer and cricketer Lloyd ‘Tiger’ Dublin has for the sixth consecutive year supported the development of the budding Buxton United Football Club, the East Demerara Football Association’s, 2008 Senior Champions.
Handing over the uniforms, balls and shin pads to the club yesterday, Dublin’s mother, Barbara Hilliman, herself an ardent sports enthusiast, said this is something that Dublin has personally taken on for the past year and ensures he saves his money towards supplying the club with equipment every year end.
Supporting Hilliman’s sentiments was Club Coach and founder, Lyndon France who is also the Development Officer of the Guyana Football Federation. Dublin was a former Buxton Football player, a member of the Malteenoes Cricket Club and was even called to national trials.
Last year, he also donated equipment to the BV Triumph United Football Club a village he resided in for some time also.
Ms. Hilliman was very emphatic in stating that her family is very supportive of sports and the development of young people especially in the Buxton area which has over the years produced some of the brightest minds in Guyana.
“We will continue to do what we can to help the youths in this area and we are very proud of what these young players have achieved this year and it shows that when you support young people on a consistent basis, they will produce quality results. We are also very happy with the commitment and the high level of discipline Coach France has brought to these players and we wish them every success in the future.”
Buxton United is primarily a junior club and competing at the senior level in their first year (2008), they have defeated all the established senior clubs on the East Coast in winning the Mackeson Senior League a few months ago.
According to France, hard work, dedication and a high level of serious discipline has been the key to their success story to date and with a nursery that has been growing from strength to strength, Buxton United is sure in for some exciting days not only on the East Coast but in Guyana as well.
Last Sunday, the entire team worshiped at the Buxton Methodist Church which is done on a regular basis and according to France they will be donating Blood to the Blood Bank sometime soon, also something that they have done in the past.
Ms. Hilliman also disclosed that a burning desire of hers is to ensure that every child in the community learns to read and also excel in their academics.
“This is something I would really like to achieve and I’ll be working very hard by God’s Grace to make it reality.”
