Broken branch mistaken for tail—searchers

The search party looking for the missing Beech King airplane has found no trace of the plane at what was thought to be the crash site.
Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc. official, Shazadh Khan, told Kaieteur News that what had appeared in aerial photographs to be the tail of the plane was actually a tree limb “at a funny angle”.
A Guyana Defence Force helicopter pilot also found nothing after scouring the area yesterday.
“Nothing was found…just broken trees, but no crash and no people,” a clearly disappointed Khan said. However, he said that examination of LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) images, which were recorded by a US plane, will continue until year-end.
The almost two-month search had appeared to be coming to an end last week, after pilots scanning aerial photographs had identified what appeared to be the tail of the Beech King aircraft protruding from trees in an area in the Middle Mazaruni jungle.
Even after local officials had called off the search, the Prometheus team followed several leads in their quest to locate the missing plane,
Last month, the team headed to Merume, located in the Cuyuni/Mazaruni area, after an aerial picture indicated that the plane might have crashed there.
They had also scoured an area at Kurupung after Brazilian miners and others had reported hearing a loud explosion after seeing a plane pass by.
The Beech King Air N87V, chartered from Dynamic Aviation Group Inc by Terraques Ltd, disappeared on November 1, while conducting geographical surveys in the Mazaruni area.
Missing and presumed dead are US pilot James Barker, First Officer Chris Paris, also from the US, and Canadian technician Patrick Murphy.
