After a goalless first half and no improvement to the score 25 minutes into the second, Stellon David impacted for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) with a 70th minute strike that eventually decided the fate of the Bakewell Buxton All Stars when play in Kashif and Shanghai football tournament continued at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground, Sunday evening last.
Earlier in the evening, late substitute, Santos, defied the odds to humble the Mahaica Determinators 2-nil, when the two teams clashed in the first game of the double header. Laurex Fraser (18th) and Michael Pedro (53rd) netted for the winners.
The night’s proceedings were marred by two mishaps. In the first, Santos’ Agassi Clark was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital after sustaining a career defining injury to his knee during the game against Mahaica Determinators, while the feature game was marred by a fistfight between two members of the GDF and Buxton All Stars who resorted to blows after a misunderstanding.
The Police ranks at the ground attempted to pacify the situation and they too became embroiled in the dispute.
The proceedings were subsequently halted as fans invaded the field despite repeated calls for peace from the moderator. Less than 5 minutes after play resumed the referee sounded the whistle and sent the Army and its supporters into a celebratory mood.
Earlier in the night late replacement, Santos defied conventional thoughts and defeated Mahaica Determinators 2 nil. Fraser and Pedro netted for the winners.
With both teams fighting viciously to gain the initiative, it was a no holds barred encounter. Despite the slippery conditions the Army boys launched several raids to the opponent’s goal and it was obvious that the soggy conditions were impacting heavily on the conversion process.
Buxton Left back, Sherwin Griffith delivered a Pinpoint strike that almost pierced the army’s custodian defence. Shortly afterwards, his teammate, Delroy Deen struck from the left wing with a powerful shot.
Once again the Army custodian intercepted. The heated tussle for ball possession resulted in Rashleigh Morrison receiving a yellow card.
As the game winded down with both teams unable to break the deadlock fans began to anticipate extra time. This almost proved to be wishful thinking when the referee awarded a penalty against the Army. The Buxtonians were obviously having a horrible night when the ball flew over the bar.
In the 70th minute the Army demonstrated how it ought to be done when Stellon David drove the ball between the uprights. Shortly afterwards the fight broke out.
