Police were forced to transfer four prisoners from the Beterverwagting Police Station lock-ups following a foiled breakout yesterday afternoon.
The prisoners were transferred to the more secure lock-ups at Sparendaam after they were caught ripping out the floor boards at the BV lock-ups.
The men, who were held last week by residents after holding up a Sterling Products Limited delivery truck, are scheduled to appear in court today.
Kaieteur News understands that the men were in one cell and were being monitored by the various ranks on duty.
According to a source, a female corporal on duty heard strange noises coming from the lock-ups and, upon checking, found that the men had already ripped out three boards from the floor.
“She just happened to check in the nick of time,” said a source at the Beterverwagting Police Station.
An escape at this time would certainly have embarrassed the police, who have boasted of making Guyana safe again by capturing and eliminating several criminal elements this year.
The Beterverwagting Police Station is designed to house juvenile and female prisoners.
The source could not say why the men were being held there since last week.
However, he stated that the facility at BV is in dire need of modernizing.
He said that, unlike other station lockups, the floor at BV is made of wood.
The Sparendaam lock-ups were recently secured following the escape of the now-dead notorious criminal Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles.
Last Thursday, the four men allegedly held up a delivery truck and robbed the driver/salesman of $50,000 and a quantity of jewellery.
Dayson Yearwood, an employee of Sterling Products Limited, was attacked and robbed by the men, one of whom was armed with a cutlass.
Yearwood, along with two porters, was delivering supplies to a shop when he was confronted by the robbers, who took away the cash and his jewellery.
The men fled further into the nearby village, but were nabbed by residents who had witnessed the robbery.
However, according to a source, none of the stolen items was recovered.
Kaieteur News understands that two of the robbers are from Mon Repos; another is from Prospect, on the East Bank of Demerara, while the fourth is of no fixed place of abode.
