DEAR EDITOR,
I am a regular visitor to India, and made many stops in Mumbai, the target of Pakistani-based terrorists who slaughtered 175 people and wounded 400 in their daring attack on the city, as seen live on TV last month.
One of the goals of the terrorists was to drive fear into people planning to visit India, hoping they would cancel their trip and hurt the Indian economy. Many Guyanese visit India on pilgrimage as well as to find their ancestors. In fact, I know of a group of NY-based Guyanese who planned a trip just before the terror attack.
They are going ahead with their visit. Two large groups of Guyanese, one from NY and another from London, returned from India last month just before the terrorists struck. I urge tourists to India and to any other country not to give in to terrorists who seek to ruin our lifestyle or influence our travel. Otherwise, they win and freedom loses.
I visited India at least a dozen times and spent weeks in all of its big cities, and never felt unsafe. India has its odd terror problems, but her cities are no more unsafe than Madrid, Paris, London, Dubai, or NY all of which also had their share of terror activities and are on constant terror alert.
All of my India trips were enjoyable, and I learn more about the great country after each trip. That is why I keep going back and taking relatives with me.
I always had peace of mind in India, and developed a heavenly feeling which I cannot describe in words. It is a feeling that can only be experienced.
Hence my annual visit over the last dozen years. Although terrorists have driven fear in people who contemplate visiting India, and there is the goal of getting them to cancel their trips, I remain committed to visiting the country again and again, and I urge others to demonstrate a similar solidarity to India, and to reject the terrorists.
I do not plan to cancel trips in February and April, and I was just invited to a tourism conference in Mumbai in January (as well as the Indian Diaspora conference in Chennai/Madras), which I am trying to fit into my schedule.
It is a great feeling being in India, experiencing its rich heritage and supreme scenic beauty and learning about its civilization. It is a majestic country that offers a compelling fascination to visitors, over five million of whom experienced the country last year.
India is worthy of a visit by everyone, particularly those Guyanese who contemplate a visit, if for no other reason than just to defy the terrorists, to send them a message that they will not control our lives, and to let the Indian people know the world is in solidarity with them in their recent encounter with terror.
