The Greenheart Medical University (GMU) is offering scholarships to Guyanese students who are eligible.
Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Holder, has said via a news release that he wants a greater number of Guyanese to have access to medical education, paving the way for a greater number of health care workers in Guyana.
“The new owners would like to give back to the society, thereby creating bridges of understanding.”
Twenty-five scholarships will be offered to eligible applicants over the next two years, covering 50 percent of the tuition cost.
“A single scholarship will be offered to an Amerindian student, allowing for 100 percent payment of tuitions.”
The release said that an outreach marketing programme will be in effect from January 12, 2009, covering areas such as West Bank Demerara, Berbice, Linden and Essequibo. GMU is an independent autonomous institution of higher education chartered and recognized by the Government of Guyana.
“To be considered for admission to Greenheart Medical, students must have graduated from accredited secondary schools or accredited or internally recognized colleges or universities.”
Courses completed at the GMU include Pre-medical Science, the Doctor of Medicine/Basic Science and Clinical Science.
“On completion, graduates are able to practice medicine in Guyana or in the USA.”
The release said that GMU is listed in the FALMER International Medical Education Directory, and its students and graduates may apply for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
“Fees are comparable with those of foreign universities throughout the CARICOM region.” Over 40 students are currently registered at GMU.
