– inclement weather blamed
Bad weather was cited as the main reason for the delay of a New York bound Delta Airlines flight yesterday.
As a result, several passengers were stranded for almost seven hours at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
The flight was initially scheduled to depart Guyana at 09:50 hours, but was rescheduled to 18:00 hours, according to an airport official.
A senior Government official who was among the waiting passengers related that passengers were waiting for quite some time before they were informed that there was a change in the flight time. The official added that no reason for the delay was given to passengers at that time.
It was a while after, the official said, that passengers were again informed that the flight time had changed, this time to 11:00 hours.
When afternoon arrived and there was still no sight of the plane, the passengers became very concerned.
The flight time then changed for a third time, the official disclosed.
Passengers were informed that the flight would now be leaving at 13:30 hours, another departure time that did not materialise.
It was at around this time, the official related, that passengers were informed that there was a delay in the flight due to inclement weather, thus the plane, which was in Trinidad at the time, was unable to head to Guyana.
However, according to the official, the reason given for the delay was questionable, since a Caribbean Airlines flight from Trinidad arrived at the airport soon after.
However, an airport official, in an invited comment yesterday, claimed that passengers were appropriately advised repeatedly as to the status of their flight.
The airport official said the affected passengers were informed that the flight was delayed due to the weather condition, but pointed out that it is not customary to explain every detail of a delay to passengers. For instance, he noted, as a result of the delay, the flight crew had to be changed as well.
The official added further that, whenever there is a delay in a flight, the onus is always on the pilot to decide, in the interest of the safety of both passengers and crew, whether to fly.
