Tigers, Camptown on winners row
By Franklin Wilson
City sides BK International Western Tigers and Sunburst Camptown stormed to respective 3-0 wins over their Linden rivals Blue Berry Hill United and Eagles United when play in the 19th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament continued on Friday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, Linden.
The energetic and vociferous home crowd was silenced from game one when Camptown behind a double from Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington, ground Eagles United.
The young Eagles line up matched Camptown play for play in the first half, the visiting team playing well within themselves while the home team enjoying more shots to goal. Just around the 22 minute mark Camptown’s Captain Orlando Gilgeous almost gave up a penalty when he handled the ball just outside the box. The ensuing kick taken by Alestor Johnson went wide of the mark, a good chance to take the lead being snuffed.
Codrington too, with just about two minutes to the half missed the chance to take the lead for Camptown when a squared ball beat goalkeeper Reon Hunte and with the open goal at his mercy Codrington went just wide of the upright.
But the second half was a different ball game as Camptown turned up the heat from the start. Their ability to hold the ball with some crisp knocks took Eagles apart. Also, the fact that the city teams have been far more active than their counterparts made a major difference.
Codrington, who played within himself in the first half took his game to the other level as he and strike partner Joseph were now a constant bother to the Eagles defence and they finally cracked under pressure in the 59th minute. Codrington it was who created the opening strike, taking the ball down the left flank to the line before squaring it to the waiting Joseph to complete the play.
As the game progressed, Camptown continued to dominate proceedings and Codrington in the 70th nailed his first. Goalkeeper Hunte, failed to take cleanly after second half substitute Troy Prescod’s throw in ended up in the six yard area. The ball ended up in Codrington’s path and he happily chested the ball into the goal.
Prescod’s introduction to the game for Lance Rolston along with Sceyon hope for Bevon Mosley, both in the 53rd minute, added more life to the Camptown attack.
Codrington closed out the scoring in clinical style with 9 minutes to go, he collected a thru ball, turned and with pin point accuracy blasted a left foot sniper that rocketed past Hunte, the goal of the tournament to date.
The victory for Camptown propelled them into the quarter-finals and a date with arch rivals Fruta Conquerors, another clash of the Juices set for Boxing Day at the MSC ground.
With the platform already set, BK International Western Tigers maintained city dominance by roaring to victory over Blue Berry Hill United 3-0, leaving Bakewell Topp XX as the only team from the Bauxite Mining Town in the tournament, not an unfamiliar position for the five-time champs anyway.
The Tigers achieved the win without making a single substitution while their opponent’s utilised their quota of three.
Devon Millington put them ahead in the 40th minute by touching the ball around a defender and as custodian Mark Liddell advanced in an effort to cut Millington off, the striker dragged the ball away from him with his right foot before slotting home.
Phillip Rowley in the 71st and Steffon Hope four minutes later completed Blue Berry Hill’s misery on a disappointing night for the home fans.
The Tigers will now face the winner of the GDF / Bakewell Buxton Stars encounter in their quarter-final game on Christmas day at the National Stadium, Providence.
The other Christmas Day clash brings together defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Pele in what is expected to be a fierce battle.
Meanwhile, the remaining group of sixteen matches will be contested this evening at the Plaisance ground.
Santos, who were drafted in for T&T’s K Brans Sports Club will face Mahaica Determinators in the main event, opening play will see the Guyana Defence Force matching skills with Bakewell Buxton Stars. Kick off time is 18:30hrs.
