Salim guides All Star to victory over Belle Plaine
A fine allround performance by Abdool Salim guided All Star to a 27 run victory over Belle Plaine in the final of Wazir Khan’s General Store 15 overs softball cricket competition last Sunday in Wakenaam.
All Star won the toss and elected to take first strike and immediately found themselves in trouble losing three quick wickets to be 20 – 3 in 4 overs.
Salim and skipper Mustak Mohamed then joined forces, and put together 80 runs for the fourth wicket before Salim was caught at mid wicket for 57 (4×4, 3×6) as he tried to step up the scoring rate.
Roopnarine Persaud then joined his skipper and the pair saw their team to a respectable 173 for 5 off their allotted 15 overs. Persaud was the last man out for 27, while Mohamed was left unbeaten on 36. Charles Benjamin with 2 – 28 and Keval Chulai 2 – 25 were the wicket takers for Belle Plaine.
Belle Plaine in reply lost an early wicket with the score on 11 in the second over, but Chandreka Ragnauth and Toolsie Sahadeo took the score to 42 in the 6th over to keep their team in the hunt. Ragnauth was then caught for 17 to trigger a collapse for Belle Plaine as they slipped from 42 – 1 to 86 – 6 in the 9th over and were eventually all out for 146 in 14.2 overs.
Sahadeo top scored with 44 and Zameer Zaman contributed 22 towards the end. Gurnauth Khemraj 3 – 22, Salim 2 – 23 and Anand Dinban 2 – 26 were the pick of the All Star bowlers who maintained a decent line. Salim was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
