Fisherman drowns in Kingelly canal

The Kingelly canal on the West Coast of Berbice has claimed the life of 32-year-old fisherman Aditya Singh.
Singh perished in the waterway during a fishing expedition with two other relatives at around 10:00 hours yesterday.
Up to late last night his body was not recovered despite a massive search by villagers.
Singh’s mother, Indranie Chattergoon, who works in the city, told this newspaper that she had spoken to her son shortly before she left for work yesterday, not knowing that it would be the last time she would hear from him.
The woman, who works at the Office of the President, said that she got a telephone call informing her that her son had drowned.
She immediately left her work and traveled home only for the dreadful news to be confirmed.
According to Chattergoon, her son, who catches fish and shrimps for a living, was with his brother-in-law and a little girl when the mishap happened.
She reported that her son was crossing the canal and as he neared the opposite bank he encountered difficulties and went down.
He never came back up.
“Ow me son, look how yuh gone and lef me,” Chattergoon cried.
An alarm was raised and residents combed the section of the canal where Singh went down but to no avail.
The police were called in and an investigation has been launched.
