Dear Editor,
Since 2002 security has been proclaimed as top priority as a result of the upsurge in crime.
Government has since embarked on various methods of improving national security in Guyana and has made amendments to a number of legislations which were approved by the National Assembly as part of the Government of Guyana’s National Security strategy.
Today, the Government of Guyana still seeks to reinforce national resolve on the issue of National Security to ensure that the environment for all Guyanese is secure now and in the future.
The Government’s anti-crime strategy is fitted into its comprehensive security plan which will serve to enhance the work of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) through government’s financial support, the Security Sector Reform Action Plan, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)-funded Citizens’ Security Programme, and the Government of Guyana/United Kingdom Security Reform Action Plan.
Security of a nation begins with freedom from dangers and risks.
In order for our nation to succeed, we must ensure that there is political and economic freedom, peaceful relations with other states and respect for human dignity.
Anything that degrades the quality of life of the people or that narrows the range of policy choices available to the government is deemed a threat to national security.
Also, this year $60 million has been allocated to ensure that young people who did not complete secondary school were trained in several skills through the National Training Project for Youth Empowerment.
The establishment of new hotels, restaurants, malls and other buildings in the business sector provide jobs for many Guyanese today.
Government places high priority on actively promoting accelerated diversification of the economy; encouraging the growth in non-traditional crops for export, again providing new and emerging sectors, diversifying employment opportunities.
It is essential to note that Government requires the full support of its people to work on the implementation of these plans so as to ensure there is National Security in Guyana.
