The Kashif and Shanghi yearly football extravaganza got off to an action packed start when Pele prevailed over Milerock 1-0, and Bakewell Top XX registering a 2-1 win over Rusal. While both teams are among the favourites to cart off the honours in this year’s tournament, the team from the Rupununi has every intention of disrupting those plans.
This group of enthusiastic footballers arrived in the city last Sunday and paid a courtesy call on Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony, at his Main Street office, yesterday morning.
Nine districts make up the Rupununi but because of accessibility challenges only players from 2 districts, Central and South Central comprise the team.
Dr Anthony greeted the players and urged them to play diligently with an aim of carting off the top honours. He reminded them of the talent within the hinterland regions waiting to be nurtured. “I would like to urge you to go out there and endorse my views,” the Minister challenged the young footballers.
The Minister reminded the young footballers that his Ministry is committed to the development of young people through their involvement in sports. “The fact that we have worked strenuously to ensure that you are here clearly demonstrates our commitment to your development,” the Minister reminded the youths.
“Give it your all and have a good tournament,” Dr Anthony concluded.
In response, coach of the team, Gary LaRose expressed sincere gratitude to the Minister and Parliamentary Secretary, Steve Ninvalle for making the participation of the Rupununi team a reality. He also acknowledged the input of Denis ‘Chow’ Hunte who had earlier traveled to the Rupununi region and rendered valuable assistance to the team in their preparations.
LaRose said that the team which epitomizes young talent had been hard at work for over 2 months. They will be in action this evening at the Plaisance Community Centre Ground against the Fruta Conqueror and LaRose is confident that his charges will leave an indelible mark on fans.
This year marks the third time that the Rupununi team has entered the tournament. In their first outing, in 2002 they managed to reach the quarter-finals. However, they were not so lucky in 2005 and were booted out in their first game. LaRose is confident that his charges will reverse their fortunes this time around.
