Cops 2 gold, 1 silver, Henk Lowe takes bronze
Leading junior swimmer Ronaldo Rodrigues, a member of the Silver Shark Aquatic Swim club, kept the Golden Arrowhead aloft when he won two gold and one silver medal at the just concluded Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad & Tobago Swim Meet held from December 11 – 14.
Rodrigues, who competed in the 11-12 age-group, led an eight member team from his club to the meet which also saw participation from Orca, Dorado and the Dolphin Speed Swim Clubs.
Henk Lowe of Dorado, claimed the bronze medal in the in the 15 and over 1500 freestyle in a time of 21 minutes 07.34 seconds.
Rodrigues, who competed at the same meet at the 8 and under level back in 2004 where he won gold (50fly), silver (50 breast) and bronze (50 back) and placed 3rd overall, again exhibited his ability to compete among the best in the Caribbean; Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada and Jamaica also had their top clubs competing at the meet.
Many of the local swimmers recorded best times. Rodrigues on the 2nd day of the meet won a silver in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2:52.95, the first place time was 2:52.08.
On the third day, he also won gold in the 50m breaststroke in 34.96 which was just below the T&T National record of 34.45 which was set in 2005. The second place time for this event was 36.75.
On the final day, Rodrigues took gold again, this time in the 100m breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:19.18. The second placed time recorded was 1:20.02.
The 8 member Silver Shark team was coached by Edna Rodrigues. The meet took place at Marlins 50 meter eight lane Pool at St. Anthony’s College. (Franklin Wilson)
