A 50-year-old man was accidentally shot by a police rank attached at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. Injured is Prince Carl of Jonestown, Mahaica Public Road. The incident occurred around 11:50hrs yesterday in front of the court.
At the time police ranks were in hot pursuit of escaped prisoner Rupert Browne, who was in court to answer some 15 charges ranging from robbery under arms to rape.
According to eyewitnesses, the prisoner bolted from the courtroom in a desperate attempt for freedom. He was pursued by the police ranks present in court.
Kaieteur News understands that the injured man was passing in the vicinity of the court when the police fired a shot at Browne. The bullet missed the prisoner and hit the civilian in his left hand.
Carl was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the prisoner was recaptured and is now likely to face an additional charge.
