Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United have recruited the services of Grenadian striker Kithson Bain to lead their quest as they seek to successfully defend their title when they face leading Berbice side Cougars in their first game this evening at the Plaisance Community ground, East Coast Demerara.
Head Coach Wayne Dover and President Odinga Lumumba who just returned from Jamaica where he met with Bain who did well for Grenada who lost to Jamaica in the final of the Digicel Caribbean Championships, said they are confident that they will go all the way again.
Bain will work in tandem with regular strikers Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams and Elton Brown. Shawn Bishop and Leon Grumble will take charge of the engine room (midfield). The three other loan players, Howard Lowe, Kelvin Smith and goalkeeper Sean Johnson will join Kelvin McKenzie and company to form what is expected to be the best defence on paper for the tournament.
Cougars though, will not be intimidated by such a star studded line up and fans can expect the side from the Ancient County to give a good account of themselves.
Veteran player/coach Phillip Carrington will spearhead their quest for victory with support from Kirth Bristol, Colin Bowry, Alvin Reynolds, Marlon Caesar, Ryan Stewart, Kelvin Joseph, Adrian Adams, Elroy Lewis and Ryan Kellowan.
This evening’s opening clash brings together three-time finalists and two-time champions Fruta Conquerors and Lethem.
The Rupununi team are aiming to upset the Fruta boys but that will not be an easy task against a well oiled and experienced unit.
Leading the Region nine line up is striker Peter Parks who’s lethal exploits upfront is well known to their opponents.
Parks will be backed up by goalkeeper Dexter Mentore, Richard Nieunkerk, Lorenzo Sampson, Everton Phillips, Ken Young, Roberto Melville, Kenny Benjamin, Anthony Parks, Elton Foo and Michael James.
They have undergone intense training under the guidance of Denis Hunte and are confident of serving up the first major upset of this year’s tournament.
Conquerors who last won the championship in 2004/05 when they defeated St. Lucia’s Dennery are quietly aiming to rout all and sundry as they seek their third title.
Delon Williams, Manasseh Primo, Akel Clarke, Oswald Cornette, Lennox Charles, Lester Peters, Chavez Hescott, Elroy Parks, Lumumba Hinds, Trevon Lythcott along with loan players Jermaine Fraser, Clive Andries (Buxton United), the leading goal scorer in the just concluded Mackeson division-one league on the East Coast, and Devon Dennis have all dedicated their skills and energies towards achieving this goal.
So the scene is set for another exciting evening of football with the only disappointment being, two more teams having to walk the plank.
