A Government and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project is helping underprivileged families to become more self-sufficient.
On Sunday, the project continued on the East Bank of Demerara with Government and UNDP Programme Analyst Trevor Benn distributing several goats and sheep to 25 families from the Grove/Diamond and Caneville communities.
Some underprivileged residents of Mocha/Arcadia were the beneficiaries of the project on Saturday.
Grove/Diamond project coordinator Oswald Fraser told Kaieteur News that each family is given a ram and a ewe.
The first set of animals that they rear are handed over to the project organizers, so that the distribution can continue. The owner is allowed to keep any other sheep or goats that are reared. An official explained to the participants that the primary objective of the project was to ensure that people living in poverty could enhance their livelihoods.
He pointed out that the project coordinator would have to ensure proper accountability, and that the animals are taken care of.
He assured that the Ministry of Agriculture will provide the services of a veterinarian to those involved in the project.
UNDP Programme Analyst Trevor Benn told participants that 14 communities benefited from the project last year. He said that 16 communities will be recipients this year.
Benn expressed the hope that the participants will view the project as a chance to elevate themselves.
Also present to see the project underway were Regional Chairman Clement Corlette and Chairman of the Grove/Diamond NDC, Omar Khan.
