Stabroek Rotary has joined hands with the National Parks Commission (NPC) to enhance the appeal and usefulness of the National Park in Thomas Lands.
The initiative was birthed out of the need to promote wellness and health among all citizens, in keeping with national and regional efforts to promote an increase in physical activity among citizens.
This park enhancement initiative seeks to promote the National Park as a model, and one of the best urban parks for open air fitness activities in the region; and in so doing, create a new consciousness of the value of such a facility in the enhancement of communities and the achievement of development goals.
Success of this venture is premised on the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders. The Rotary Club of Stabroek will act as the primary facilitator of the project, and will develop and direct the avenues through which resources from both the private sector and the NPC can be amalgamated. The NPC will provide technical expertise and oversight, and collaborate with Rotary Stabroek to manage the initiative.
The implementation of works will be done in phases. The plans include planting of trees and shrubbery, construction of picnic benches and tables, benabs, kiddies’ play area, and installation of additional garbage receptacles. Other plans include creation of a beach volleyball court with stands, and the reintroduction of pony rides as an added attraction at Play Land.
