A chilling recording from the voicemail of Hardel Haynes, an electrician of Spurwing Drive, South Ruimveldt, who was beaten to death recently, has been recovered.
The recording was apparently made by the man while he was being beaten by a group of yet unidentified persons in Perai Square, East La Penitence, at about 02:15 hours one week ago.
In the recording, the voices of a number of persons can be heard, asking “Wha yuh come through here fuh?” and “Is the wrong neighbourhood you come in.”
Meanwhile, a singular voice can be heard saying “Don’t beat de man; leh de man go.” The same voice can be heard telling the mob, “Don’t buss de man head up.”
Haynes died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he was beaten by the mob, which reportedly had mistaken him for a thief.
The badly beaten man was reportedly dropped off in front of the East La Penitence Police Station, and a rank on duty was simply told that he (Haynes) was a thief.
Those who had left the battered man at the police station had driven away without giving the rank any sort of identification of who they were.
A post mortem examination revealed that multiple injuries were the cause of Haynes’s death.
Even though persons have claimed to have information about the incident, they are reluctant to come forward and give this information to the police.
Despite this, a senior police source has confirmed that the police have detained five suspects in connection with Haynes’s death.
Many citizens of Georgetown have expressed concern that being in the wrong place at the wrong time may result in them being soundly beaten, or in them losing their lives similar to the way Haynes apparently lost his.
Haynes was buried yesterday afternoon, after a funeral service at the Merriman Funeral Parlour.
