Police suspect gang involvement
Linden teen Ashaki Njeri Wambi Coppin, of 42 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, has been reported missing since December 3, 2008.
According to family members, the 18-year-old girl was last seen at the minibus park in Linden, apparently on her way to catch a bus to return to her home. The missing girl’s mother, Rhonda Coppin, said that her daughter went to an Internet café to do some research for an Agricultural Science project, after which she was scheduled to return home.
One of the missing girl’s aunts reportedly saw her at the minibus park, but did not call out to her as she had seen and talked to her earlier the same day.
Rhonda, who was visibly distraught, said that she even took her daughter’s photograph to the minibus park in Linden and enquired whether anyone had seen her. Apparently, no one has seen Ashaki since she left the minibus park, supposedly on her way home.
Compounding the situation, said Rhonda, is the fact that her daughter apparently has no boyfriend with whom she may have disappeared. “She does tell me everything,” said Rhonda, explaining that she was extremely close with her daughter.
The missing girl’s cellular phone has been turned off. Since she went missing, many of Ashaki’s friends have been asking her mother about her whereabouts, since they, too, have not seen her in a fortnight.
Since then, the police have held and questioned the missing girl’s brother, Ato Coppin, 17, and two other students of the Linden Foundation School, which all of the teenagers attend. The other two students are friends of Ashaki and Ato.
The teens were reportedly released on Saturday and were asked to report back to the police today.
According to Rhonda, she has heard that the police suspect some kind of gang involvement in the disappearance of Ashaki. She (Rhonda) added that the police think that Ato and Ashaki may be a part of this gang.
Meanwhile, Ato reportedly told his mother that he had heard that the gang had connections and members in other schools. He said that he did not know that the gang had links to his school.
Ashaki was reportedly last seen wearing a pair of dark blue shorts and a black and silver top.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Ashaki Njeri Wambi Coppin is asked to contact the police, or her mother on 617-1348 or 671-9886.
