As part of its mission to assist the less fortunate, the New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir recently donated two wheelchairs to persons who had suffered a stroke and were subsequently paralyzed.
Receiving the wheel chairs were Jailall Gopaul of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice and Sharda Goberdhan of Line Path, Skeldon. Goberdhan had her right leg amputated due to diabetes.
President of the organization, Pandit Suresh Sugrim, said that the entity will continue to live up to its motto of ‘service to humanity’ by touching the lives of the less fortunate individuals and making a difference.
“During this time of the year, as we are getting ready to celebrate the Christmas holidays, we must be reminded that it’s a time of giving, caring and sharing for the less fortunate. We must not only think about ourselves and our immediate family, but we must also think about all those who are less fortunate than ourselves,” Pandit Sugrim said.
The organisation was established in 1987 as a benevolent, non-profit, charitable, cultural and social organisation in New Jersey, United States of America, while its Humanitarian Mission in Guyana was established in 2005 to provide charitable services to the very needy and less-fortunate children and elderly persons across the country.
It is dedicated to helping children, senior citizens and other individuals who are in dire poverty.
“This possibility is accomplished through the generosity of their (the entity’s) contributors, sponsors and caregivers by providing children and seniors with programs, benefits and services that meet the basic everyday needs, in order to enhance their human dignity and to raise their physical and educational levels in a meaningful and lasting way,” the president explained.
He added that the organisation has been working in Guyana since 2005 to help the Guyanese community. Some of the activities the mission has been involved in include providing food vouchers for the disabled children and adults, school supplies for the less fortunate children, refurbishing senior citizens’ homes and children’s orphanages.
Funding for the mission is primarily generated from private and corporate donations and through various fundraising events.
