The National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) says that it has, for some time now, been lobbying for better wages for the workers it represents at Toolsie Persaud Limited, but to no avail.
Recently, NAACIE penned a letter lobbying for Christmas bonus for the workers, but with almost one and a half weeks away from Christmas, there has been no response from Toolsie Persaud, according to NAACIE’s General Secretary Kenneth Joseph. He said that the letter was sent to the company since October, and a reminder was sent only last week.
Joseph said that since the letter was sent in October, he was told that the company’s Chief Executive Officer was out of the country; and since the Human Resources person is no longer there, no one else can address the matter.
Joseph said that the workers have all indicated that they are prepared to take whatever industrial action is necessary so that their plight can be addressed.
Joseph said that the union was expecting a response yesterday. However, up to late last evening, they had not got any word from Toolsie Persaud.
According to Joseph, the union will be meeting with the workers it represents later today to determine what course of industrial action to take.
In addition, the union is yet to receive word from Toolsie Persaud about wage increases. Joseph said that over the past three years, the union and the company have been working with a gentleman’s agreement. Today, the union would rather something more concrete for the workers it represents, he added.
