‘Favouritism’ blamed for setback at N/A Stelling

Passengers at the New Amsterdam Stelling were reportedly left stranded for over an hour yesterday afternoon after what was described as a blatant act of favouritism, which they alleged was displayed by a senior official on duty.
According to one of the stranded passengers, Dave Persaud, a number of drivers were in the line with their vehicles awaiting their turn to board the ferry when, surprisingly, three buses which were not in the line were allowed to proceed.
Consequently, when it was time for a Canter (the driver of which was in the line) to be placed on the boat, the vehicle could not have been accommodated. According to Persaud, the irate driver then decided to block the gangway, and as a result the ferry was delayed for over an hour, with the driver refusing to remove.
Persaud is of the view that the stelling official exhibited favouritism by allowing the three minibuses to go onto the ferry ahead of all the other vehicles which were ahead of them.
He noted that when he vented his frustration with what was taking place, the supervisor at the stelling threatened to place him in the lockups.
The passengers were at the stelling since approximately 16:30 hrs, and up until 18:00 hrs they were still awaiting another ferry to arrive.
Persaud said that the relevant authorities should look into the situation with urgency, as matters of this nature only cause discomfort to persons traversing the stelling on a daily basis.
