BATH SETTLEMENT, WEST COAST BERBICE – The Aditya Kids Trust Foundation of Bath Settlement on the West Coast of Berbice has come to the assistance of 12-year-old Ravie Dave Sain, of Bath Experiment on the West Coast of Berbice.
Secretary/Treasurer of the group Zulfikar Alli explained that the organization is contributing towards the cost of radio therapy which is being done in Guyana, “The therapy costs $365,000 however the family is hoping that the Ministry of Health will assist in offsetting the expense.” The child began treatment in Georgetown during the first week in December.
According to a document from the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation dated October 3rd, 2008, the child’s complaints included inflammation and epistaxis from the nose. He also suffered from a swollen face.
A physical examination revealed that there is a mass affecting the right side of the nose, prognosis of right eye and inflammation of the right side of the face.
A CT Scan revealed, “A large mass in the region of the base of the skull with local bony destruction with encroachment of the right middle cranial fossa, right para sellar region, right optic canal and orbital fissure. Locally infiltrating naso pharyngeal mass is likely possible.”
A biopsy report later detected Juvenile Nesophaygeal angiophibroma and as a result there was no possibility of surgery. He was referred to the Cancer Institute for radiotherapy.
In August, the mother of the child sought assistance from the president of the organization Narchand Mohan called ‘Archie’ of Ontario and besides the cost for the procedure, transportation expenses will be paid by the organization.
The mother, Bhagmattie Sain, recalled that something was growing inside the child’s nose and as a result that affected his breathing. It was first observed last year and after seeking medical help he was referred for surgery in Trinidad but instead it was done right in Guyana.
Since he began receiving the therapy the swelling on the face reduced somewhat but he is still not breathing through the nose, “One one time he ah holler fuh he head. He eye gone down lil bit, it been pitch out. One of he eye bigger than the other one but me see it gone down lil bit.”
In expressing gratitude to the Aditya Kids Trust Foundation she said she could not make it on her own, “He been a go to school but since he sick he nah go to school. He been in standard three at Bath Primary.”
