Uncle Freddie is wondering whether there is something behind a leader of the PPP extending a Merry Christmas to him. Uncle Freddie, it’s Christmas! The Season of Good Cheer! A time when people set aside their differences and be good to each other, even if it simply means greeting someone who can be a real thorn in their side.
I have long opined in these columns that the reason why Uncle Freddie feels so passionately about the things that he sees are bad about the PPP is because at the unconscious level, at the subliminal points, he is deeply concerned about his old party.
He expects them to do better and therefore when they do not perform according to his wishes he is angry.
It is very much like a parent who is harsh to his or her child. A parent is often harsh to his or her child not because he does not love that child, but because he or she wants better for that child and thus is demanding at times, to the point of being too inconsiderate.
It is his concern for the President that drives him to be so critical of the man. This criticism has however become an obsession. I would not be surprised to learn that Uncle Freddie shouts out the name of the President in his sleep.
Almost all of his articles are about the President, a sure sign that he simply adores the man and wants him to do better.
This is why he is always on the man’s case, as he was last Saturday.
His latest criticism is about the decision of Guyana to apply to host the 20/20 World Cup.
Uncle Freddie should not be complaining. While it is true that Guyana suffered losses as a result of hosting Cricket World Cup 2007, the fact is that now we have the infrastructure in place and therefore we need to now constantly try to ensure that they are utilized so as to ensure some returns.
We do not have to build a new stadium, as we had to do in 2007. We already have that in place. The government does not have to support the building of a top class hotel near to the stadium, because we already have a hotel in place.
According to Geoff Da Silva, all the hotel rooms were filled for Carifesta, but according to him, we spent close to one billion dollars to ensure this happened.
In the case of the 20/20 World Cup, we would not have to spend the money that had to be spent for both Carifesta and CWC 2007. There is going to be the need for only minimal spending because the hotels are there and the stadium is there.
What should happen is that we should begin as early as the Main Big Lime to market this event.
There are a great many Guyanese who are now pouring into Guyana for Christmas and since there is always in this country an absence of wholesome and family-based entertainment, a great many of those arriving for the holidays will be at the Main Big Lime.
We should begin to invite them, through flyers, to return for the two semi-final matches that Guyana will host in the 20/20 tournament.
Guyana had no choice but to host these matches since we need them to bring tourists here, both from the Caribbean and from North America.
With the Berbice River Bridge soon to be completed more persons will come for the matches from Suriname which has a large cricket-loving Guyanese fan base.
I also think that even Uncle Freddie will be at the matches. I urge him therefore to rethink his position on Guyana hosting these matches.
I also urge him to rethink his position on President Jagdeo. Not everything the man does is bad or wrong. The man has also done a great deal of good and for this he must be given recognition.
I have a suggestion to make. I would like to organize a challenge one-tip, two-tip cricket match between Uncle Freddie and President Jagdeo. Uncle Freddie likes to boast about his ghetto days but no one has ever seen him pick up a cricket bat.
If Uncle Freddie loses the match, then he should agree to leave President Jagdeo alone for the rest of 2008. If on the other, President Jagdeo loses the match, he should appoint Uncle Freddie as a minister in his government.
Uncle Freddie is uncertain about the price to sell his soul. Well I will suggest to Uncle Freddie that he too has his price and that price is a chance to do what his heart has long desired: work for the PPP government.
