Another dismal batting display sent Guyana crashing to a 18-run defeat against Trinidad and Tobago at the Invaders ground yesterday in their third round TTCB regional 50-overs under-17 cricket series.
Off-spinner Jomal LaFleur (3-21), leg-spinner Amir Khan (2-20) and left-arm seamer Andre Stoll (2-39) conspired to dismiss the host for 136 in 49.1 overs before the Guyanese, slumped to 119-9 when their 50 overs expired to give unbeaten T&T their third consecutive win in the six-team competition as Man-of-the-Match leg spinner Yannick Carriah finished with 3-18 from 10 overs.
Coach Orin Bailey described the Guyana batting performance as atrocious adding that his young batsmen ‘are just not using their heads’ in the middle. “We have the talent but I don’t know what is happening here.
They guys are just not batting like they did in Guyana. The bowlers have done well so far but again today we struggled to score chasing a small total and the fact that (Herrel) Greene faced 102 dot balls in 30 just shows how defensive and timid the guys are batting here,” Bailey added.
Greene opened the innings and faced 124 balls before he was finally dismissed in the 43rd over and although Jamally Odle tried to step up the scoring with a 39-ball 22 with three fours and a six, the Guyanese batsmen again seemed to be suffering from ‘stage fright’ following their narrow win against the Windward Islands on Friday when they limped to 124-9 in 49.3 overs.
Yesterday Trinidad and Tobago won the toss and elected to bat and the new ball pair of the consistent Seon Daniels and left-arm pacer Andre Stoll kept the batmen ‘locked up’ with tight bowling.
Kieron Joseph (5) was run out at 21-1 in the eighth over and after 10 overs, the hosts, with victories in their first two matches, were 28-1 with Daniels (5-2-9-0) and Stoll (5-0-18-0) giving Guyana the ascendancy.
La Fleur, playing his first game in the competition, was introduced and quickly got rid of Evin Lewis (10) and Skipper Yannick Ottley (4) to catches at mid-on to leave the pre-tournament favorites on 39-4 in 18 overs.
Keon Joseph, the quickest bowler in this year’s regional under-19 series in Barbados, immediately brought a good size crowd to life with his genuine pace after his strange omission from the first two games.
His first five-over spell, bowling first change, cost just nine runs as he unsettled the batsmen with some quick short balls on another slow track. Sachin Boodram, one of six left-handers in the side, straight drove La Fleur for a four and six as T&T tried to ‘up the tempo’ in sweltering heat.
Khan had Yannick Carriah (26) caught at deep mid wicket and Kirwyne Sirjn taken at short mid-wicket for a duck as T&T slumped to 73-5. Boodram (17) then lofted La Fleur to deep mid-wicket in the 30th over as the home team, lost three wickets for two runs to be on 73-6.
With the melodious sound of Tassa drums rolling just beyond the boundary at a Hindu wedding and the ‘feel of Christmas’ very much in the air here, the hard working Daniels returned for a second spell with Trinidad and Tobago on the back foot.
However, like they did in the first two games, the Guyanese allowed the opposition’s tail to wag in overcast conditions. Marcelle Jones (17) and Rixon Maniram (19) added 35 in a fighting seventh-wicket partnership as they put Guyana under pressure with aggressive running on the heavy outfield.
Joseph eventually removed Maniram at 108-7 in the 45th over, while Jones was run out at 121-8 with three overs to go. Teshawn Castro (14) dumped Stoll for six over long-off before he was bowled by the same bowler at 129-9 in the 48th over. Stoll ended the innings off the first ball of the final over when Kissoondath Magram (0) steered a catch to the keeper.
T&T opened the bowling with pacer Castro and left-arm spinner Darron Beekah and La Fleur, who never suggested permanence, edged a catch to slip off Castro after top edging the pacer over the keeper’s head for four off the previous ball.
Delon Fernandes joined Greene in the third over with Guyana on 4-1 and was dropped down the leg side by the keeper off Castro before he had scored at 5-1 as Castro bowled with pace. Beekha produced three consecutive maidens to an extremely timid looking Greene.
Greene (who took 21 balls to get off the mark) and Fernandes carried the score to 24 before Fernandes, with scores of 9 and 4 from the first two games, seemed unfortunate to be given leg before to Beekha for 10 in the 14th over. Dayanand Roopnarine (2) was then run out as Greene failed to respond to a call for a single to cover and Guyana were in trouble at 29-3 in 18 overs.
Jamally Odle eased the pressure by pulling a six off Beekha who finished with 10-4-17-1 and then stroked off-spinner Boodram over mid-off for four before he was leg before to the spinner as Guyana slipped to 64-4 in 30 overs.
With Greene struggling to get the ball off the square, Clinton Pestano dumped Boodram for a straight six before he too seemed unlucky to be given leg before to left-arm spinner Ottley for seven at 78-5 in the 35th over. Carriah struck at 88-6 in the 38th over when Stoll (7) was stumped, while Ottley bowled Joseph for a duck one run later to the delight of the partisan crowd. Carriah then ended Greene’s misery when he was caught and bowled at 93-8.
With the tension mounting, Daniels clobbered Carriah over mid-wicket for a huge six to post the 100 in the 44th over. Carriah then had Daniels (9) caught at deep mid-wicket at 106 leaving the last pair of Solomon and Khan to get 31 runs from 26 balls.
They reduced the target to 24 from 12 balls and then 20 from the final over bowled by Carriah.
Guyana could only manage two off the last six balls as Trinidad and Tobago remained unbeaten to keep their hopes alive of winning the competition. Guyana face Jamaica in their penultimate game today before coming up against the Leewards in their final match at the Queens Park Oval on Wednesday.
Windwards beat the Leewards and Jamaica got past Barbados in the other games yesterday leaving Guyana now with no chance of taking the inaugural title.
Left-arm spinner Trinson Carmichael was surprisingly dropped after just one game while opener Quincy Ovid-Richardson was omitted after two failures. Ricardo Devers, who was also omitted after one game, was the other player left out of the starting line-up yesterday.
Guyana face Jamaica in their penultimate game today and Manager Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis lamented the apparent general lack of focus to the job of representing Guyana shown by his young charges and their overall attitude as the young players embark on a learning phase in their careers.
He added that while he has 14 very talented players on tour he feels more has to be done to develop the mental aspects of their cricket and understanding of what is required by national cricketers. The former first-class fast bowler also thinks longer pre-tournament camps are needed for players at this level. The Guyana team had a 10-day camp before traveling to Trinidad.
Guyana could be without Skipper Solomon for today’s game after the keeper injured his right shoulder while attempting a run out yesterday and Joseph who aggravated a groin injury. Both players are expected to undergo fitness tests today.
