– launches ‘Children of Guyana’ calendar
It was a highly entertaining afternoon of songs, dances, poetry and dramatic presentations when the children of the Irene Madray’s Recreational Arts and Resource Center in Cane Grove, Mahaica, yesterday hosted their annual Christmas concert.
Children from all walks of life gathered yesterday at the centre, which was officially launched last year, to participate in the event.
There were a number of captivating presentations, and in the presence of just over 200 children the centre’s ‘Children of Guyana 2010’ calendar was launched.
Explain the idea behind the calendar, Deborah Ramotar, a member of the Board of Directors, said that 12 children from around Guyana will be selected for the calendar, with one being from Cane Grove.
Each child will be sponsored by a company or individual who will provide them with tools and resources necessary to contribute to the overall growth, development and educational advancement of the child.
Awards were yesterday given out to outstanding students, who have been attending the centre, which is part of an after-school program within the community.
Parents who volunteered their time to assist the students in various ways were also honoured yesterday.
Also speaking with the children yesterday was President of the Guyana Watch Inc, Tony Yassin, who urged that more parents become involved in the programs.
Yassin, who through his organization has assisted many children across Guyana with corrective surgeries, also gave his support in supplementary sponsorship with activities at the centre.
Guyanese, Richie Singh, who owns and operates several restaurants and bars in New York, was also at the event as part of showing his support for the organization.
The entity, which is coordinated by Dianne Madray, was established in honour of her mother who died some years ago.
The facility is equipped with an extensive library, a computer centre and a classroom.
There is a multi-purpose court along with a play area in the compound.
On Saturday, the centre will be hosting its annual Christmas party for its students along with those living in the community.
