The Ministry of Health has revealed that there are several rapid response teams in place as it relates to the flooding situation being experienced in various parts of Guyana.
It was noted that there is a social mobilization unit, which will be providing information on issues such as hand washing and diarrhoea prevention, among others.
Another team has been given the responsibility for mobilizing and deploying health care providers, including doctors, Medex and social workers, in areas where there is flooding.
The Health Ministry has received reports of flooding in various parts of the country, such as areas on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD): Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary Rivers, and Canals Polders on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD). And, as such, the situation is being closely monitored.
A press release from the ministry stated that teams of health care workers have been assigned to the riverain areas, and are already responding to the needs of the persons living there. These teams will continue to provide services throughout the remainder of December 2008 and January 2009.
The teams will make available oral rehydration solution (ORS) and antibiotic creams for persons living in these areas, and environmental teams are visiting with the view to assist in the clean-up exercise.
Also, a disaster management coordinating team has been activated, and is scheduled to meet once weekly under the chairmanship of Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy. However, it was explained that, if any serious flood situation occurs, the team will begin meeting on a daily basis.
“Various activities are in the process of implementation, and as such, teams are working in the fields to ensure that people are prepared to cope with the possibilities of flooding.
The Ministry of Health has always taken a proactive, people-focused approach in dealing with flood and flood-related issues, and therefore plans developed are based on a worst-case scenario,” the press release stated.
As such, the ministry is advising that persons keep a supply of drinking water and a torchlight handy, ensure that a pair of long boots is accessible, and ensure that children not be allowed to play in the flood water. Adults are also advised to avoid contact with the flood water, especially persons with cuts and sores.
