Cutting the ribbon is DSL Retail Manager Brian Perreira; DDL’s Vice President Komal Samaroo; Minister Manniram Prashad, DDL’s Chairman Yesu Persaud, and DDL/DSL Director, Sharda Veeren-Chand
Distribution Services Limited (DSL), a subsidiary of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), yesterday launched a new Cash and Carry Supermarket on Sheriff Street, Campbellville.
The new supermarket brings the number of DSL Cash and Carry outlets to four, adding to those at Ruimveldt, Diamond and New Amsterdam.
DDL Chairman, Dr. Yesu Persaud, speaking at the launch, said that when the company reported to its shareholders, and indeed to all Guyana, earlier this year, the focus was on performance and earnings. He outlined the future the DSL were pursuing as a company in all of their divisions.
He said that while a lot of attention has since been given to their new bottling plant, the multi-column still and the bio-methanization plant, it was also mentioned that the DSL Cash and Carry will be undergoing significant growth and expansion. Yesterday was the first milestone in the promised development.
Dr. Persaud also said it is expected that shoppers in this and nearby communities will have a chance to experience the Cash and Carry service without undertaking the extra drive to Ruimveldt, nothing there was no better time for the launch than at Christmas.
He added that the Cash and Carry model differs from regular supermarkets, because customers are able to shop at wholesale prices, which brings cost savings at the register (the more customers shop the less they will pay)
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, acknowledged the contribution that DDL and its subsidiaries have added to the Guyanese economy and to private sector development, and noted that DDL’s contribution to the economy in the past five years is quite commendable.
Over the last five years, DDL’s corporation and property taxes have exceeded $2.5 billion; the dividends paid to shareholders have exceeded $1.3 billion; and emoluments and benefits paid to employees have been in excess of $7.5 billion, according to sources.
Minister Prashad congratulated DDL for the DSL expansion, and noted that the, “Expansion of their Cash and Carry division and other significant expansions in other areas come at a time when the major economies in the world are in recession, global markets are contracting, and when many are claiming that small economies, including ours, will be affected.”
As a special launch offer, customers who purchase more than $15,000 yesterday or today will automatically become DSL wholesale customers for life.
