What is the battle of the opposition?

Dear Editor,
When the Alliance For Change (AFC) was formed, I thought that they had a great battle ahead which most Guyanese did not see.

To my surprise, they ended up just like the rest of the opposition, nothing grand to fight over. They try to make big issues of little matters, and sometimes they talk things which are of no interest to the people.

I don’t think people are interested in which Parliamentarian has dual citizenship and immigration visa. The people want to know about education, jobs, housing, food, health, etc.

These are the things that the Government is paying much attention to: building and modernizing schools; building and modernizing hospitals and health centres; opening land to build houses and to do agriculture; opening training centres for new teachers and nurses; sending young people abroad to study, etc.

Columnists like Roop and Ravi Dev believe that building a nation is like cooking food. You decide what to cook, get the ingredients and start the fire.

Roop, in his column, said that it is four years since the Brazilian Government has shown interest in ethanol production and the Government is not showing any interest in it.

Projects like bridges, hydro power, universities, factories, etc take time before such ventures can be undertaken.

First, feasibility studies have to be done, and then there is the problem with financing; and, as we all know, Third World countries don’t have money, so they have to borrow. These projects take years to be realised.

Since Obama won the presidency of the USA, the AFC have been trying to convey to the Guyanese people that they are the Guyana Obama team and that Guyana can learn from them.

In one of their articles, they said that “there are fundamental lessons to be learnt from America politics and that can instruct a new political culture in Guyana”.

The USA has become the most powerful and richest nation in the world, yet the majority of its people live a miserable life. There are no proper educational, housing and health policies. People have to do two jobs to make ends meet. They encourage brain drain from poor countries because they pay them less, and spend less to educate their own.

Over 25 million people don’t have medical insurance, and of those who have, over 90 percent are not qualified to receive it. There is always some fault with the patients.

Their corruption has made the whole world go into a recession. The housing market has squandered over seven hundred billion dollars, and now they are calling on the government to use the tax payers’ money to bail them out. What Obama did is not new to the Guyanese people.

When Dr. Jagan started his political career, he mobilised the Guyanese people and was able to win all the elections in Guyana. After the 1992 election, he brought people from different organisations to form the Government. Dr, Clive Thomas was offered a role in the Cabinet but the WPA stopped him from taking it.

He let Rudy Insanally remain at the United Nation. Presently, the Government has members from the opposition party in the Government.
