-suffered multiple injuries
Corporal Wesley Hopkinson of the Guyana Defence Force died from drowning. He had also suffered multiple injuries during last Monday’s boat collision in the Cuyuni River.
This was confirmed by an autopsy yesterday, which also showed that the 27-year-old soldier suffered a gash on the top of his head, as well as injuries to the chest.
It is believed that the injuries rendered him unconscious.
A source said that the injuries seemed to suggest that Hopkinson was standing in the vessel when it collided with a civilian boat.
Hopkinson’s body was recovered at around 8:30hrs on Thursday, some 15 miles from where the accident occurred.
His colleague, Private Colwyn Harris, has still not been located.
It is still unclear whether the six ranks, who were stationed at Eteringbang, were on patrol, or if any weapons were lost during the collision.
Hopkinson was dressed in black three-quarter pants and a green vest when his remains were found.
An army release stated that the vessel with six soldiers collided with a civilian vessel in the Cuyuni River at about 20:30 hours on Monday.
It said that preliminary reports indicate that four of the soldiers were thrown into the river by the force of the collision, and two of them made it back to the safety of the boat, while Hopkinson and Harris did not.
Their colleagues immediately set about scouring the area in an effort to locate them.
Hopkinson’s relatives said that army officials who visited them on Thursday said that the occupants of the civilian vessel headed towards the Venezuelan border after the collision.
According to the relatives, they were also informed that the boat captain is being questioned.
A relative also said that there were reportedly no lights on either boat. Commodore Best reassured Hopkinson’s relatives that an investigation is underway to unearth all details of the mishap.
A relative told Kaieteur News that Hopkinson is to be buried on Sunday, after a church service at Victoria.
