Horse cart operator Ramesh Mangalram was fortunate to escape unhurt on Thursday night, after his horse stepped on an electric wire on the North Sophia roadway.
But the horse itself was electrocuted after coming into contact with the illegal connection that a North Sophia resident had rigged up from a GPL pole to her home.
Mangalram told Kaieteur News that he was heading home on his horse cart on Thursday night when his horse suddenly staggered and collapsed. It died shortly afterwards.
According to Mangalram, one of his employees received mild electrical shocks while trying to unharness the dead animal.
The man said that, on examination, he observed that his horse was lying on an electric wire that was attached to a nearby pole.
He alleged that the wire led from the pole to the home of a female resident in North Sophia.
Mangalram said that he immediately called out to the resident, who eventually emerged and disconnected the wire from her house. However, he said, the occupants have refused to compensate him for his loss.
The horse cart owner alleges that the illegal connection was installed several months ago, and he had often warned the occupants about the potential danger to residents and animals alike.
When Kaieteur News visited the area, Malgalram’s dead horse was still lying on the roadway, which is the main entrance to North Sophia.
A piece of electrical wire from the illegal connection was still attached to a nearby pole, while another portion of the same wire was on the road near the dead horse.
However, the occupants of the house to which the wire was allegedly attached were nowhere in sight.
The incident was reported to ranks at the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost.
